Ruby on Rails 4.2

Over the past year our developers have been upgrading the framework that the Circle system is built on, from Ruby on Rails 3.2 (R3.2) to Ruby on Rails 4.2 (R4.2).

Now that we are at the stage of asking some of our technically minded customers to beta test it for us, it seems like the ideal time to address some questions, such as: What is Ruby on Rails? What is the difference between R3.2 and R4.2? And most importantly, what does this mean for your bookshop?

Ruby on Rails is an open-source software. The ‘source code’ can be modified by any individual computer programmer, therefore, the more people who contribute to the code the more sophisticated it becomes.

Due to the open-source nature of the software, once a version becomes outdated (as 3.2 is) and a significant portion of the community has migrated to a new version, the support previously offered by that community diminishes.

The R4.2 update includes a range of performance improvements, but most importantly it offers our customers greater security.

The beta test that we would like our confident, tech-savvy customers to take part in will help us smooth out any compatibility issues the Circle system may face in this upgrade.

Email Bryan at support@circlesoft.net if you want to test it for us.
